Winters in Canada can have windchills, snow storms & temperatures can dip below -30 degrees Celsius. It’s important to dress correctly in order to avoid things like frostbite!
Dress in Layers
Dressing in layers creates barriers from the elements & keeps you warm. The first step is to wear a base layer. A wool long sleeve sweater or thermals work best. You also might want to layer leggings or thermal pants under your jeans. Another great option to to wear a snow suit or ski/snow pants. Don’t forget a pair of cosy wool socks!
Jackets
Not all jackets are created equal. When looking for a winter jacket you want to find one with a temperature rating around -20 to -30 degrees Celsius. These jackets are designed to keep your body heat in! Additionally, looking for something that is long and comes to your knees or ankles.
Boots
Winter boots are not only vital for keeping your feet warm and dry, but they are designed to keep you from slipping on ice. Look for boots that are water proof/resistant, lined, freezing temperature rated & have thick soles. You might also want to purchase a pair for crampons. These are metal or rubber grips that attach to your shoes for added slip protection.
Hats, Scarves & Gloves
Keeping your head and fingers warm can save you form frostbite and keep you more comfortable. Look for water resistant gloves/mittens that are rated for winter. Another thing to look for is a lined hat that will cover your ears. A scarf is also a great addition to keep your neck & face warm.
