December was not only a momentous occasion for everyone celebrating the Holidays. It was an opportunity to share the occasion with communities across the city. Hosted by the Land of Dreams Urban Farms at the Alex Community Centre, the event featured fun and food on December 19th.
So what exactly is the Community Dinner?
The community dinner is an event Land of Dreams hosts every month, where different communities come together to share their cultures, news, and simply be in a healthy environment. We often come together to have a wonderful time and share new knowledge with those who may not know others’ cultures.
Held monthly, some dinners are holiday-themed; however, at its core, it is an event for communities to come together, share their love of the community, and foster a sense of belonging.
Fun Games:
Land of Dreams deeply values connections and fosters a sense of belonging. Whether you’re born in Canada or from another country, we ensure everyone is having a good time. What better way to demonstrate that than the activities that took place during the event?
Games include dancing while blindfolded, keeping a potato up with your partner, and moving the present around according to the directions of a Christmas poem. All of this to keep the love and fun alive. But outside of those games, we also had fun activities such as face painting and dancing.
Food stories:
The community dinners we host are potlucks where members and newcomers can bring a dish. These dishes may be recipes from different cultures or homemade dishes that evoke a more comforting time. These dishes aren’t just delicious meals that we share. They are key to building connections and enjoying each other’s company.
For this month’s community dinner, given that it was Christmas, many dishes celebrated the occasion, including cookies and other baked goods. However, some dishes were also placed for significant effect, such as Shawarma, Vietnamese spring rolls, and even Lasagna.
A plate full of plentiful and delicious food, but also a feast befitting of sharing great stories and news with everyone.

As mentioned earlier, the community dinners are held monthly. The upcoming community dinners are scheduled for January 16, 2026, and February 20, 2026. They will be held at the Alex Community Centre on 17th Avenue SE, Calgary. We hope to see you all in the next one!
