National Indigenous History Month

People in Canada celebrate National Indigenous History Month every June and recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of Indigenous, Inuit & Métis peoples.

Long before Alberta was a province, Indigenous people inhabited this land, speaking distinct languages and creating complex government, social & economic structures. Their history goes back 11,000 years!

The unique and wonderful worldview is shared through stories, food, song, dance & tradition. These are all rich with culture and diversity that is to be celebrated, admired and protected.

“The land is our soul. Our people believe the earth and all its creatures are a gift from the Creator. This beautiful land of lakes, forests, rivers, plains and mountains is a gift from the Creator and it must be respected and treated properly.” – Doug Cuthand, Askiwina: A Cree World.
