Newcomer Child & Youth Connections (NCYC)

SERVICE DETAIL

Newcomer Child & Youth Connections (NCYC)

Newcomer Child & Youth Connections provides immigrant and refugee children and youth, ages 5-24, with ongoing support for their settlement, education, health, well-being, and social integration.

In the summer, NCYC hosts summer camps for refugee children in partnership with the City of Calgary at indoor and outdoor parks and recreation facilities. NCYC also hosts a specialized summer camp for refugee children and youth with disabilities.

Throughout the year, NCYC offers educational and recreational activities for government-assisted refugee children and youth living in temporary accommodation. Additionally, NCYC offers field trips to points of interest around Calgary to orient young newcomers to their new community.

On an ongoing basis, NCYC offers three streams of programming:

Sport for Settlement (S4S)

Youth Case Management (YCM)

Refugee Child Enhanced Integration Project (RCEIP)

What we do

Sport for Settlement provides young refugees with exposure to diverse sport opportunities through structured training with qualified coaches.

Through programming, newcomer youth improve their physical literacy, develop a sense of belonging, and transition into the sports club structure in the community.

YCM offers intensive support to recently arrived refugee youth for 12-18 months to help them overcome persistent and complex barriers they face with settlement.

Identified youth work closely with one Youth Case Manager to develop an individualized, goal-oriented care and action plan.

RCEIP provides comprehensive and coordinated assistance to newly arrived refugee children and youth, as well as their families.

Project staff work with the Calgary school boards to support the integration of students and families into schools and their greater communities.
