The best way to instill healthy habits in kids is to make the process of habit building a fun and enjoyable experience.
This is what happens when we have ‘Kids Orientation’ at Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Center (MCRC). We had one of those recently when children aged 5 to 12 years participated in an engaging orientation focused on hygiene, nutrition, and staying active.
The session, organized by CCIS’s Heath & Wellness team and supported by medical student volunteers from the University of Calgary, aimed to instill healthy habits in young minds through fun and interactive activities, including songs and dance.
The hygiene segment emphasized the importance of regular handwashing, brushing teeth, and bathing. Children learned about germs and how proper hygiene can prevent illnesses. They practiced handwashing.
In the nutrition section, the children were introduced to the concept of balanced diets. They explored different food groups and learned about the benefits of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins.
The staying active portion encouraged children to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. They participated in fun exercises and games that demonstrated how staying active can be enjoyable. The session highlighted the benefits of regular exercise, such as improved mood, better sleep, and stronger muscles and bones.
It provided children with valuable knowledge and practical skills to lead healthy and active lives. The interactive approach ensured that the kids were engaged and excited to apply what they learned in their daily routines.
