You may hear a land acknowledgement if you have ever been to an event in Canada. But what is a land acknowledgement?
Land Acknowledgement
A land acknowledgement is an act of reconciliation that involves making a statement recognizing the traditional territory of Indigenous people. This has been a tradition that dates back centuries for Indigenous people.
Why is it Important?
For settlers (Non-Indigenous people), the act of performing a land acknowledgement is a fundamental step towards reconciliation between Indigenous Peoples and settlers.
Our Land Acknowledgement at CCIS
In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we honour and acknowledge Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani as well as the Stoney Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we acknowledge all Nations, indigenous and non, who live, work and play and help us steward this land, honour and celebrate this territory.
