Supporting Latin American Voices in Calgary

Strengthening Voices, Creating Opportunities: Social Leadership and Latin Organizations in Calgary brought together social leaders and representatives from Latin organizations across the city as part of the annual conference of the Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS/ACELAC) at the University of Calgary.

The roundtable explored the needs, challenges, strengths, and contributions of Latin American communities, while highlighting initiatives that support settlement, integration, belonging, and participation in Canadian society.

CCIS was represented at the event by Mayil Sanchez, Settlement Counsellor with Rocky View Immigrant Services (RVIS), who participated as a panelist. Drawing on her experience supporting newcomers and diverse communities, she shared insights on the importance of accessible settlement services, mentorship, community connections, inclusion, and opportunities that empower newcomers to thrive.

The discussion provided a valuable opportunity to elevate Latin American voices, strengthen community partnerships, and advance more inclusive and connected communities across Calgary.
