CCIS (Calgary Catholic Immigration Society) is a nonprofit organization that provides settlement and integration services to all immigrants and refugees in Southern Alberta. Since our inception in 1981, we have been a community leader with solid experience in the design and delivery of comprehensive services for our newest neighbours. We deliver these services through a dynamic multi-cultural, multi-denominational and multi-disciplinary team of professionals who collectively speak over 90 languages.

From airport reception to a first job interview, CCIS’s programs and services have been designed to assist immigrants and refugees through all phases of the settlement and integration process. CCIS – Family and Children’s Services (FCS) Division

The Family & Children’s Services division operates on a holistic, strength-based philosophy, to facilitate the integration of families and children into the community, enhance the provision of services to newcomers by community resources, strengthen families and the community, and promote the healthy development of children.

Job Summary

The Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) seeks a qualified individual for the interpreter or Translator position. As an Interpreter or Translator, you provide interpretation and translation services for immigrants or refugees and recruit for the following positions in Calgary or Airdrie location:

  • American Sign Language
  • Bosnian
  • Bulgarian
  • Danish
  • Dinka
  • Dutch
  • Finnish
  • Flemish
  • Georgian
  • Greek
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Khmer
  • Kinyarwanda
  • Kurmanji – Sorani
  • Lingala
  • Luganda
  • Nigerian
  • Nuer
  • Oromo
  • Serbian
  • Somali
  • Swahili (Central Africa)
  • Swahili (East Africa)
  • Swedish
  • Tagalog
  • Thai
  • Turkish
  • Ukrainian
  • Vietnamese

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing professional language interpretation/translation in different settings including in the community in various medical, legal, business, education, and other settings.
  • Building excellent relationships with CCIS business clients and immigrant families.
  • Demonstrating integrity and adhering to the highest standards of confidentiality.
  • Attending meetings at different locations throughout Calgary, in person and online.
  • Acting as a “fan of the program” (and CCIS), helping to promote it, representing it well, and contributing to its success.
  • Contributing to an inclusive work environment through appropriate, effective communication and positive relationships.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with complementary community-based services.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proficiency in English communication and another language
  • Language interpretation credentials: certification, memberships, training, or work experience
  • Demonstrated experience providing language interpretation
  • Enhanced interpreting skills through continued education training
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, along with a positive attitude
  • CILISAT / TIN # / ATIA membership is required
  • Your own active liability insurance coverage
  • An acceptable criminal record check with a vulnerable sector search that is recent (from within the last three months). This will be obtained as part of the selection process after an offer has been extended.
  • As travel is required, the successful candidate must have a current valid driver’s license, a clear driving abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle
  • All applicants must be legally eligible and entitled to work in Canada
