Celebrating International Women’s Day – Women’s Voices Group

Women’s Voices is a community group of women from diverse cultural backgrounds who come together to build bridges between cultures, reduce isolation, build friendships, promote a sense of belonging and increase self-esteem by offering cultural, social, educational and recreational activities on a monthly basis.

This group was formed in 2008 following an International Women’s Day event planned by several organizations (including CCIS-ROP) for women in NE Calgary, held at Village Square Library. The attendees decided they wanted the opportunity to continue meeting regularly and sharing together. So, with the help of the original organizing agencies, Women’s Voices was born.

Although agency involvement comes and goes, CCIS and the Village Square Library have remained as back bone support for this women-led group. The Library provides monthly meeting space; CCIS works with group participants to identify their interests and then helps facilitate activities and learning topics. Apart from assistance from the Library and CCIS, the group is self-sufficient, with members offering their skills and talents, and they bring food to share.

The topics of interest among these women are far ranging from hands on learning activities such as crafts, exercise and fieldtrips to serious discussion topics including family conflict, mental health, and grief.

The Women’s Voices group is a wonderful example of women’s natural tendency to come together and support one another. In honour of the group members, and in recognition of the Women’s Voices history, each year at the March meeting, CCIS-ROP brings a rose for each participant to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Join us this month in celebrating the International Women’s Day this month.
