As the sun sets on an extraordinary career at CCIS, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Cynthia D’Souza, our beloved Main Switchboard Receptionist, who is retiring on Monday, March 31, 2025, following 35 years of exemplary and dedicated service.
Cynthia’s journey with CCIS began as a newcomer to Canada, seeking a sense of belonging in a foreign land. Little did she know that her quest for connection would blossom into a lifelong commitment to helping others find their place in this country.
The CCIS motto at the time of Cynthia’s arrival was, “I was a stranger, and you made me welcome.” Recalling her early days at the agency, Cynthia reflects: “I felt like a stranger, but this organization welcomed me with open arms. That sense of belonging and purpose inspired me to stay and contribute to the mission of helping others find their place, just as I did.”
Over the past three and a half decades, CCIS has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a modest organization into one of Canada’s largest non-profits dedicated to serving newcomers. Cynthia has been an integral part of this journey, witnessing and contributing to the organization’s exponential growth and its ever-expanding impact on the community. As CCIS adapted to meet the changing needs of an increasing number of newcomers, Cynthia took pride in her role in this evolution. She reflects on this growth with a sense of accomplishment:
“Over the past 35 years, I have witnessed CCIS grow tremendously, expanding its services and impact within the community. From a small team to a well-established organization, CCIS has continually adapted to meet the evolving needs of newcomers. I am most proud of how we have strengthened our support systems, providing more resources, training, and opportunities to help individuals build successful lives in Canada.”
Throughout her tenure, Cynthia has been the calm centre of the ever-busy Fifth Floor reception area at CCIS’s bustling main office, managing a constant stream of walk-ins, calls and appointments with grace and efficiency: “Witnessing the overwhelming influx of newcomers and refugees and having the privilege to support them during challenging times is something I will always hold dear. Each interaction with these individuals reminded me of the importance of our work and the profound impact we had on building their new beginnings.”
Her approach to this demanding role was simple yet profound: “Staying organized, being approachable and maintaining a calm, professional demeanour,” she explains
Cynthia’s impact extends far beyond her official duties. She has been a mentor, a friend and a beacon for countless colleagues. Oleksandra (Sandy) Zavertaliuk, CCIS Business Centre receptionist, beautifully captures Cynthia’s essence: “Not all heroes wear capes. This perfectly describes Cynthia, who, despite her quiet and humble presence, has been the backbone of our organization for so many years.”
“Since the day I joined the team, Cynthia has been my teacher, coach, and role model. I’ve always marveled at how she remains calm, mindful, and focused, no matter the challenges at hand—whether it’s handling clients with difficult life situations, managing an overwhelming number of calls, or remembering every staff member’s name, position, and contact information. And the list goes on!”
Gloria Bathen, Administration Division Manager, echoes this sentiment: “Cynthia’s dedication, hard work and loyalty to this agency, along with her patience, and empathy for both staff and clients, are genuinely valued, recognized and deeply appreciated.”
“Her unwavering commitment to her role, her calm demeanour and her ability to treat everyone with respect, kindness and understanding is leaving a lasting impact on both her colleagues and the clients she has assisted throughout her career. Her contributions will never be forgotten.”
Lucila Dela Cruz, who has had the privilege of working alongside Cynthia for 18 years, began her journey at CCIS as a volunteer and trainee with Cynthia, eventually leading to roles as a junior secretary, back-up receptionist and now, intake facilitator. Reflecting on Cynthia’s impact, Lucila notes, “Cynthia is a true professional who leads by example. She inspired me with her smile, calmness, patience, kindness and compassion. That excellent attitude and character is something to aim for daily, whether on the telephone or in-person.”
Cynthia’s legacy at CCIS is one of compassion, professionalism and steadfast commitment to service and community. Her role as the first point of contact for newcomers has given her a unique perspective on the challenges they face. “Seeing firsthand what they go through gave me valuable insight into their struggles and needs, making me more knowledgeable and better equipped to offer guidance,” Cynthia shares
As she prepares to embark on her next chapter, Cynthia looks forward to relaxing, travelling, and cherishing time with her family, especially her three grandchildren. True to her giving nature, she also plans to continue volunteering at her church and supporting causes close to her heart
To the colleagues and volunteers she has mentored over the years, Cynthia expresses her gratitude: “Thank you for your collaboration and hard work. I’m proud to have worked alongside you.”
CCIS CEO Gordana Radan shares her thoughts:
“Cynthia’s 35 years of service have been nothing short of extraordinary. Her dedication, compassion and professionalism have set a standard of excellence that will inspire everyone to come after her. She’s been the heart of CCIS, and her legacy of kindness and empathy will continue to shape how we welcome those starting new lives in Canada. Thank you for your invaluable contributions to CCIS and to the countless lives you’ve touched. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.”
As we bid farewell to Cynthia D’Souza, we celebrate a distinguished career, and a life dedicated to service, compassion and the betterment of our community. Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us as we carry forward the mission of CCIS.
To Cynthia, we say thank you, congratulations, and may your retirement be as rewarding and impactful as your time with us.

That would put it back to 1989, over in the old building on 17 Ave and 1st. When I first met you, in ’98, I really appreciated your friendless and kindness. And over the years since I have been consulting with CCIS, I could always count on your friendly face and asking me how I was doing. It was a warm welcome every time even when you were busy and had a full reception area of people. Thank you for your dedication to CCIS. I will miss you. All the best and enjoy your retirement!
Cynthia D’Souza: Thank you all for your lovely comments. Miss you all. Thank you Bamidele for posting this beautiful article. Best Regards, Cynthia.
