Highlights from FLIP

Here are some highlights from our Foothills Local Immigration Partnership (FLIP) office!

March

FLIP was able to partner with and support the ‘Magic of Friendship and Belonging’ event put on by the High River Library, which introduced newcomer and immigrant families to the library, various resources, and businesses, all while enjoying family-friendly activities. This was a great start to the month in High River as it led to IDERD awareness and information being shared at the library throughout the month, with educational materials dropped at various locations across the town.

A key activity for the ‘Celebrating Community Diversity’ Working Team was to share thoughts, information, and commitments to anti-racism through a radio campaign. FLIP was able to arrange both radio spotlights and an online written article focusing on anti-racism and IDERD. Sun Country interviewed working team member, Jenn Galope. If you have a moment, please read her thoughts shared with the Foothills community here: https://okotoksonline.com/articles/iderdhighlightingimportance-of-building-an-inclusivecommunity

Long-time FLIP member Sepah Mazloum, through his committee and partnership, organized the 8th annual IDERD commemoration day in Okotoks. Mayor Thorn shared profound thoughts on the topic of inclusivity and anti-racism as the official for the Town of Okotoks. April

April is Arab Heritage Month! We are partnering with the Arab Arts and Culture Society and the Okotoks Film Society to put on a movie event that will both promote community connection and conversations, as well as cultural awareness and education.

On Tuesday, April 21st, at Almira’s Restaurant, there will be a presentation and community conversation on Arabic culture, offerings of Arabic art and food, and FLIP partners presenting Arabic-related community resources (Okotoks Public Library, High River Library, and McMan). Tickets are free, but you must register! Please share on socials, newsletters, contacts, and friends!

Another Key Activity for the ‘Community Connection’ Working Team was adapting existing programming to include cultural elements. Both Okotoks Public Library and High River Library are planning Arabic cultural family story time in recognition of Arab Heritage Month.

As well, to continue promoting entrepreneurial and economic opportunities, with a particular effort to connect with newcomers and immigrants, FLIP has partnered with Community Futures to host a free Business Development series at the High River Library.

There is always something on the go, and the support from partners in creating communities of belonging for everyone makes a difference.
