Building Maintenance Worker (BMW)

The CCIS Building Maintenance Worker (BMW) Training Program is a one-of-a-kind full-time training program specifically designed for individuals who are seeking academic upgrading, and to learn the basic skills of a maintenance worker. This will help you become competent in your field, with the ability to build and grow your career in the building maintenance industry.

By completing the program, you will have the required skills to make adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilation and, appliances, in addition to performing routine maintenance jobs such as plumbing, electrical systems, painting and drywall repair.  You will receive training on proper sanitization, disinfection, facility disposal/recycling systems, and ensuring the security and safety of a  building. The foundational supports provided allow you to pursue 5th Class Power Engineering Certification for future career development.

This course covers the following:

  • Essential Skills and Academic Upgrading which includes:
    • Occupational English Communication Skills training
    • Math and Science Fundamentals
  • Basic Computer Skills
    • Fundamental computer concepts
  • Applied Skills Development and Hands-On Training:
    • Building Maintenance Theory
    • Hands-on Training at SAIT
    • Handy-Man Workshops
  • Work Experience with Industry

Safety Training:

  • Demonstrate awareness of occupational safety
  • Safety Training certification

Employment Preparation:

  • Communication, workplace integration and employment preparation
  • Occupational English & communication
  • Life & work management skills
  • Occupational health & safety
  • General employment preparation
  • Landed immigrant/Canadian residing in Calgary and area
  • 18 years old and above
  • Unable to find employment or marginally employed due to limited occupational language skills, lack of knowledge of Canadian employment practices and lack of Canadian
  • experience
  • Eligible for Employment Insurance (EI), Income Support, unemployed Albertan and/or as assessed by Alberta Government/ Advanced Education
  • Physically fit and capable of working long shifts
  • Class 5 driver’s license is an asset
  • Minimum Grade 10 education level
  • Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark 5
  • Strong interest in establishing a career in Building Maintenance
  • Good interpersonal relationship skills
  • Ready, willing and able to complete the training program
  • A Building Maintenance Worker (BMW) commonly works in:
