Opportunity for Refugee Claimants to begin a Career in Alberta’s Construction Industry

On August 20, CCIS hosted “Starting a Career in Construction as a Refugee Claimant,” bringing together clients from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East to explore new career pathways in Alberta’s booming construction sector. Held at the CCIS Main Office and powered by the Manpower and Refugee Claimant Transitioning into Community (RCTC) Program of CCIS, this initiative marks a bold step toward inclusive workforce development.

Participants, aged 25 to 50 and equally represented by men and women, engaged in interactive sessions covering industry trends, employer expectations, health and safety, and pathways to certification. A standout moment was a hands-on bridge-building activity using paper, scissors, and tape—symbolizing that everyone has a builder’s spirit, regardless of prior experience.

100% of attendees enrolled in the initiative, demonstrating strong interest and commitment. This first cohort signals a promising future, with more groups expected in the coming months. Notably, the event highlighted a growing number of women entering construction, a sector traditionally underrepresented by female workers.

Refugee claimants can now have real opportunities to secure formal employment in construction, which also addresses Alberta’s urgent need for reliable labour. Those who land their first job through the program may be eligible for sponsorship of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and will receive one year of ongoing support from Manpower, ensuring a smooth transition and long-term success.

This initiative wouldn’t have been possible without Manpower’s generous partnership. Manpower’s commitment to inclusion is helping to reshape the workforce. Special thanks to Laura Massignani and Abraham Ortega, whose dedication and support were instrumental in organizing the event.
