This summer, CCIS clients have been making some noise in the stands, cheering on Calgary’s newest professional sports team — the Calgary Wild FC. Thanks to the generosity of the team and their sponsors, clients have had the opportunity to attend five home matches during the Wild’s inaugural season in the newly formed Northern Super League (NSL), Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league.
Among those in the stands were newly arrived refugees staying at the Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre, who attended matches alongside staff members from our Newcomer Child & Youth Connections team. For clients, it was their very first time experiencing a professional sporting event in Canada, and it was a chance to connect with their new city though sport.
The Calgary Wild FC is one of six teams competing in the NSL, a groundbreaking step forward for women’s professional sports in Canada. Beyond the excitement on the pitch, the Wild have made a clear commitment to community engagement. By donating game tickets, they’re helping to ensure that all Calgarians — including newcomers and those who may face financial or social barriers — can be part of this exciting chapter in Canadian sports history.
We’re grateful to Calgary Wild FC and their sponsors for opening their doors to our community and for showing that sport has the power to build bridges and create belonging.
