For Romgelyn Bagang’s, life in Canada began in August 2024, when she arrived in Brooks as a permanent resident through Spousal Sponsorship. With a background as a licensed teacher in the Philippines, Romgelyn was eager to establish herself in her new home.
On October 4, 2024, Romgelyn attended a Tradeshow-Job fair Event hosted by the Southern Alberta Chamber of Commerce and stopped by our Brooks and County Immigration Services (BCIS) booth. There, she met Employment and Mentorship Counsellor Cai Bernardo, who introduced her to the our Rural Mentorship for Integration (RMFI) program.
Recognizing the value of mentorship in navigating the Canadian workforce, Romgelyn joined the program as a mentee and was paired with Rowena Bazan, a seasoned educator. Through her mentorship relationship with Rowena, Romgelyn gained invaluable insights into the teaching licensing process in Canada.
Romgelyn also received comprehensive support in her job search through BCIS’s employment program. The program staff helped her build a strong resume, prepared her for job interviews and coached her through the hiring process.
Romgelyn’s hard work and determination paid off when she secured a full-time position as an Education Assistant at Grassland Public School. This achievement marked a significant milestone in her Canadian journey, and Romgelyn is grateful for the instrumental role BCIS played in her success.
“The mentorship program and employment services provided by BCIS were excellent,” Romgelyn says. “The guidance and support I received were invaluable in helping me navigate the Canadian job market and achieve my career goals.”
Romgelyn’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship, community support and personal determination. As she continues to thrive in her new role, her journey serves as an inspiration to fellow newcomers.
