Brooks & County Immigration Services (BCIS) welcomed 18 newcomers to its Getting Started in Canada workshop in September, providing practical information and resources to help participants navigate life in Canada and build a strong foundation for successful settlement.
Developed in response to needs identified through a Training Needs Assessment, the workshop focused on financial challenges and increasing awareness of community resources.
Participants learned about healthcare, government benefits, housing and tenant responsibilities, budgeting, digital skills, winter preparedness, and strategies for building independence.
The session also gave newcomers an opportunity to connect, ask questions, share experiences, and learn about resources available in their community. Facilitated by BCIS staff, the workshop fostered a welcoming and supportive environment that encouraged participation and discussion. Through workshops, settlement services, and community partnerships, BCIS continues to help newcomers build confidence, strengthen community connections, and thrive in their new lives in Canada.
